Instinctively the little baboon senses danger and tries to climb a tree as quickly as possible. But one of the lionesses has already seen him. The baboon is only a month old and not yet strong enough to climb.

The lioness and baby baboon are face to face. The photographers can see there is not much hope for the little baboon and prepare to take an impressive photo.

… but instead the lioness did something remarkable: not only did she kill the baby baboon, she pushed it inquisitively with her front paw and picked it up gently.

After a while she gently picked up the baboon in her mouth and walked away, then sat down with the baby between her front paws.

The two took a little rest together. The baby baboon even tried to suckle the lioness. But the peace was soon disturbed by two uninvited guests.

Two large male lions came to claim their share of the prey. When they notice the baby baboon, the males are not as caring as the ladies. The lioness tries to chase the males away in order to protect ‘her new baby’.

Then another incredible thing happened. The group of baboons was still hiding in the trees. But they kept a close eye on the little baboon. When the lioness was distracted by the males, a baboon seized the opportunity. He jumped down and picked up the baby as quickly as possible.

Sometime after the baby was rescued, Evan and Lisa saw him again safe in his father’s arms. Lisa told to National Geographic:

“No matter what, the young baboon remains an inspiration to me—and a reminder, that life is fragile and no matter how much we fight to control its outcome, all we can do is live in the moment.”
