Face masks are important for public health during the pandemic. Many people are faithfully wearing masks in order to prevent others from being infected with COVID-19. But it’s also a big adjustment for a lot of people.
Why are glasses fogging up when wearing a face mask?
Those of us with glasses have to deal with a new phenomenon: foggy glasses. When you wear a mask, your warm breath escapes from the top of your mask and hits the relatively cool surface of your glasses, resulting is fogging glasses. The process is similar to when you open the oven or drink a hot tea or coffee.
You don’t want to handle your glasses without washing your hands first. So you might have asked yourself: How do I wear a face mask without fogging up my glasses? Believe it or not, it can be done. There are a number of useful workarounds that you can do to keep your lenses clear. Here are a 3 helpful ideas:
1. Soap and water
This trick is actually one that healthcare professionals have turned to over the years. All you need is water, dish soap, a single drop is sufficient, and a soft cloth. Now simply rub your lenses on both sides with dish soap and rinse off with water. You can allow your lenses to air dry or gently wipe them dry them with a microfibre cloth. The soap leaves behind a thin film, preventing fog from sticking to the lenses.
2. Seal the top of your mask
Sealing of the top of your mask prevents warm air hitting your cold glasses. This can be done in several ways. You can pull your mask up higher and use your glasses to shape it to your face. You can also use a piece of micropore tape or a folded tissue across the bridge of your nose to close the gap. If you try this, make sure your mask still fits properly over your face. Your nose and mouth should be completely covered.
3. Sprays and wipes
You can purchase sprays and wipes that are designed to tackle foggy glasses. Make sure to alway check the ingredients and the product revieus. Some products may damage your glasses or lenses. If you’re looking for new glasses, you might consider buying lenses with an anti-fog coating.
Keep in mind, the World Health Organization says mouth masks are only effective when used correctly. Therefore, always make sure that a mouth mask fits well.
